History and Legend

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, established in 1873 by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, is a landmark of devotion in Kuala Lumpur. Initially serving as a private family shrine, this sacred sanctuary opened its doors to the public in the late 1920s, becoming a spiritual haven for countless devotees.



Main Deity

At the heart of the temple resides Sri Maha Mariamman, the compassionate mother goddess revered for her protective and benevolent nature. The temple also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and Lord Murugan, the valorous god of war and victory.

Uniqueness of the Temple

The temple's striking gopuram (tower) stands tall at 23 meters, adorned with intricate carvings depicting an array of Hindu deities and mythological scenes. Inside, the sanctum sanctorum is a vibrant tapestry of frescoes and sculptures, each narrating tales of divine lore. The temple's crowning glory is its silver chariot, which parades through the streets during the grand Thaipusam festival, drawing devotees from near and far.
