Girivalam is going around the sacred hill, especially the sacred hill Thiruvannammalai.
It is one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalams of lord Shiva in which the lord is worshiped in the form of fire.
Girivalam around the mountain Thiruvannamalai on pournam’s (full moon days) is considered to be one of the sacred practices that has been followed for ages. It is believed that the Siddhars went around the mountain to seek the blessings of lord Arunachala, an embodiment of lord Shiva.
It is believed that going around the mountain can bestow any boon of the devotee with the blessings of lord Shiva. It is also believed that the Siddars live in the mountain of Thiruvannamalai and heal the people in their minds and bodies. The herbs on and around the hill are said to cure diseases, reduce stress and anxiety, and help one in leading a peaceful life.
The Girivalam path is around 14 kilometers (8.7 miles ) lakhs of devotees go around the mountain by chanting mantras like 'Om Namah Shivaya', 'Om Arunachaleeshwartaya Namaha',' Anna malalaiyarrukku Arogara', and many other names of lord Shiva.
