Legend:
Goddess Uma maheshwaris birth as Renukamba
The legend narrates the goddesses Renukamba to be an incarnation of goddesses uma maheshwari . Renuka devi was born to be the princess of vidarbha desam. When she attained the age of marriage she had to travel the world to find her husband along with her army. At kundali puram Renuka had to cross the place where saint Jamadhakni – an incarnation of lord Shiva was doing penance.
The war between the sage and the Renukamba
Renuka devi’s army occupied and camped the place surrounding the ashram of saint jamadhanki and hence the name “Padavedu ”meaning army encampment. it is said that the Renuka devis army disturbed the saint's penance. Outraged by this act , there began a war between Renugamba's troops and the saint's disciples.
The formation of Kamanandala river:
During this war Renuka created a huge fireball as her weapon with the blessings of goddess Chamundeshwari, and the saint put it off by collecting the water from the entire universe in his kamandalam and used it as his weapon. The saint dropped the kamandalam and created a river that extinguished the fire. The river from the saint Jamadhanki's kamandala is called Kamandala nadhi.
Renuka's marriage with the sage Jamadhanki and the birth of sage Parashurama:
After the victory of the saint, Renuka learns the purpose of her birth on this earth and marries the saint Jamadhanki.
The couple gives birth to the sage Parashurama - the incarnation of lord Vishnu and a few sons.
It is said that saint vishwamitra grew along with saint jamadhanki and performed the rituals. The sages used to perform yagna every day and Renuka devi used to bring water with a fresh pot made out of sand on the same day. Once it happened that Renukadevi gazed at the gandharva flying in the sky, and was late to the yagna.she was late to the yagna and it was disturbed, Renukadevi felt ashamed.
Angry sage Jamadhakni ordered his sons to cut Renuka's head, none of them did so except Parashurama. As per his father’s wish Parashurama chopped off the head of his mother.
padavedu is a place where many saints and great people performed penance and attained salvation.
Pleased by Parashurama's act the saint asked if he wanted any wish, Parashurama wished that his mother be back to life and stay with them. Jamdhanki granted the boon. They tried to fix the head but could not do it.
In anxiety the head of Renuka devi was fixed to a dhobis head and vice versa. Showing that motherhood is universal. The agni kunda where the yagna was performed still exists and the holy ash from this is given as the prasadam for the devotees.
It is said that once Karthaveeryarjuna killed the saint Jamadhankia and stole the holy cow- Kamadhenu. Angry Parashurama bravely fought and brought back the kamadhenu after killing karthaveeryarjuna and destroying the Kshatriya community.
