Sheetla Mata Temple of Gurgaon

Sheetla Mata Temple Gurgaon is one of the chief Hindu pilgrimages in India. It is situated near a pond at the Gurgaon village in Haryana. Every year thousands of devotees come to this temple from different parts of the country as well as abroad. Shri Mata Sheetala Devi is the chief deity of this temple and is also popularly known as Shakti Peeth.

Mata Sheetala Devi is known by several other names such as Masani Maa and Bhagat Lalita Maa. The word Sheetala basically means smallpox (disease). It is a common belief among the devotees in the Hindu sect that if a person suffering from smallpox worships her with full devotion then the goddess relieves him from his ailment.

At the month of Chaitra (March-April), the Sheetla Mata Temple becomes like a Kumbh-Mela. Several devotees come to this sacred temple for the Mundan ceremony of their children and newly married couples also visit this temple to get blessings from Mata.

According to the legends about three centuries ago there were two brothers known as Singha and Padarath in Gurgaon village. These brothers owned large acres of land. Singha was a good-natured and religious person. He used to spend most of his time in devotion and singing bhajans. As a result of which Sheetala Devi was impressed by his devotion and blessed him with a boon.

The boon of Sheetala Devi was such that if Singha touched any person suffering from disease, it would relieve that person from his ailment. Singha left all the comforts of life and started meditating beside the pond. He also built a crude temple and started worshipping Sheetala Devi there. One day Singha found the idol of Sheetala Devi while collecting mud from the pond. He consecrated this idol in the crude temple that he had built before. This crude temple later became the famous Sheetla Mata Temple Gurgaon.
